Part 3A
What significant information did I learn about these interveiws?
In these interveiws I learned about these peoples' lives and how different their lives were from each other based on their race, religion, and skin color. For example, Chris Thorsten, an Iron Worker, who was interveiwed by Arnold Manoff at the age of 51. He risked his life everyday at his job. He stated that, "You ain't and Iron Worker unless you get killed." This is basically saying that he is expected to die to become a real Iron Worker. He got squeezed between a crane and broke his collar bone, his ribs, and three of his vertabre while working and had to be laid up for four years. Another example is Mrs. Marie Haggerty, a maid, who was interveiwed by Mrs. Emily Moore at the age of 72. She was a nurse maid, or a second girl, who was tested with a five dollar bill. When she worked people were tested, "You got hired by your looks and even if you looked honest, they would test you out." One day she got to work and she found a five dollar bill on the bed-side table and knew she was being tested. "Why, once I was making up a bed, and right beside the bed was a five dollar bill. I knowed nobody dropped that for nuthin', so I didn't know if I should pick it up and tell them, or what, but my face burnt like fire, for I knowed I was gettin' tested."
